Guru Nanak Foundation of Tidewater
Description

The Guru Nanak Foundation of Tidewater is a Sikh place of worship, or Gurdwara, that serves as a vibrant spiritual and community hub for all people. Guided by the teachings of Guru Nanak, it is a sanctuary founded on the core principles of selfless service (Seva), honest living (Kirat Karni), and meditating on God's name (Naam Japna). The Foundation welcomes everyone, regardless of their background, offering a space for spiritual learning, community fellowship (Sangat), and the promotion of equality and compassion for all.
Key features

Service and equality

Langar (Free Community Kitchen): A central feature that demonstrates the Sikh principles of equality and selfless service. The Gurdwara offers free vegetarian meals to all visitors, who sit together on the floor to eat, symbolizing the elimination of social distinctions.

Nishan Sahib (Sikh Flag): A tall flagpole flying the Sikh flag with the Khanda symbol prominently marks the building from a distance, signifying its role as a spiritual beacon for the community.

Four Entrances: The Gurdwara's design often includes four entrances, representing that it is open to people from all four directions and welcomes everyone without discrimination.

Worship and learning

Darbar Sahib: The main prayer hall houses the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture and eternal Guru of the Sikhs. Congregants sit on the floor as a sign of humility and respect.

Kirtan: The weekly services include the singing of sacred hymns (Kirtan) from the Guru Granth Sahib, which helps create an atmosphere of devotion and spiritual reflection.

Spiritual Teachings: The Gurdwara serves as a place for the community to listen to spiritual sermons and learn about Sikh ethics, customs, and history.

Community and support

Community Center: The Foundation serves as a vital community center, organizing events, providing support, and fostering intergenerational connections among its members.

Volunteerism (Sewa): Much of the Gurdwara's operation is run by volunteers, reinforcing the core Sikh value of selfless service. Community members participate in everything from cooking and cleaning to organizing events.

Inclusivity: Following the teachings of Guru Nanak, the Foundation is open and inclusive to all people, promoting interfaith dialogue and offering support to those in need within the wider community.
