Description
The Islamic Society of Bosniaks in Utah (ISBU), also known as the Maryam Mosque, is more than a place of worship; it is a vibrant cultural hub in Salt Lake City. Established by Bosnian refugees, this converted former church building stands as a testament to the community's resilience, faith, and desire to preserve its heritage. It is a welcoming and inclusive space that fosters understanding between different cultures and faiths.
Key features
Cultural hub: The center hosts events to share Bosnian traditions, culture, and hospitality with the wider Salt Lake City community.
Community resilience: Founded by Bosniak refugees who resettled in Utah after the Bosnian War, the mosque symbolizes the community's strength and continuity.
Interfaith connection: The mosque is named Maryam (Mary), a conscious choice that highlights the community's shared reverence for the Virgin Mary with Christians and promotes interfaith dialogue.
Refurbished building: In 2017, a former Baptist church was remodeled into the current mosque, which features a new facade, a minaret, domes, and an iron fence.
Traditional Bosnian architecture: The mosque's courtyard features a sebilj, a public fountain modeled after the one in Sarajevo's historic Baščaršija bazaar.
Community engagement: The ISBU collaborates with other local organizations, including the LDS Church, on community projects that focus on youth and finding common ground.
