Description
The Islamic Cultural Center of New York (ICCNY) is a prominent mosque and Islamic cultural center in Manhattan's East Harlem, serving as the first building in New York City constructed specifically as a mosque. Architecturally, it is a notable blend of traditional Islamic design, such as its grand copper dome and minaret, with a modern, postmodern architectural style that uses pink granite and steel. The building's footprint is uniquely rotated 29 degrees from the orthogonal Manhattan street grid to face Mecca, creating an exterior courtyard and symbolizing the alignment of faith within a modern urban context. Beyond a place of worship, it is a non-profit organization that offers extensive educational, religious, and social services, aiming to foster community, understanding, and dialogue about Islamic culture.
