Cards' pitcher Wainwright shines at plate
Los Angeles (AFP) – St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright struck out a season-high nine batters, hit a home run and drove in four runs Friday in a 6-3 victory over the Brewers in Milwaukee.
Wainwright, who notched his first win of the Major League Baseball season, pitched five solid innings. He held the Brewers to two runs on six hits and didn’t walk a batter.
Brewers starting pitcher Wily Peralta lasted just four innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and an intentional walk. He failed to strike out a batter for the first time in 20 starts.
Peralta helped out on offense, putting the Brewers on the board with a run-batted-in single in the second inning.
But Wainwright erased the deficit with a one-out, two-run home run in the third inning.
The Cardinals added three runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Randal Grichuk and a bases-loaded single by Wainwright that scored two.
