Knee injury ends Red Sox hurler Wright's season
Washington (AFP) – Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright will have a cartilage restoration operation on his left knee Monday and will miss the rest of the 2017 season, the Major League Baseball team said.
Wright, 32, was 1-3 with an 8.25 ERA through his first five starts this season before being placed on the disabled list with a sprained left knee.
Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the right-hander hurt his knee in spring training.
Wright, who was a first-time All-Star in 2016, going 13-6 with a 3.33 ERA in 24 starts, missed significant time last season with bursitis in his right shoulder.
The Red Sox said he was expected to be ready for the start of the 2018 season.
