The Gurudwara Sahib The Sikh Cultural Society Inc., located at 95-30 118th St. in South Richmond Hill, is a Sikh place of worship and community center. Also referred to as "the doorway to the Guru," this gurdwara is an open and inclusive space where Sikhs gather for worship, service, and learning.

As a spiritual and social hub, the Gurudwara Sahib offers a sanctuary for the eternal Guru (the Guru Granth Sahib) and a welcoming environment for all people, regardless of their background. Visitors are expecte to remove their shoes and cover their heads as a sign of respect before entering the main hall. The gurdwara is fund through donations from the community (sangat), which are use for its upkeep and various programs.

Spiritual and religious

Guru Granth Sahib: The holy scripture is the central focu of worship and is treate as a living Guru. It is housed on a raised platform called the takht or manji sahib, under a canopy.

Darbar Sahib (Prayer Hall): This is the main hall where the congregation gathers for worship and spiritual activities. The Guru Granth Sahib is respectfully place in this hall during the day.

Worship services: Daily prayers include the singing of hymns (kirtan) and the reading of verses (paath) from the Guru Granth Sahib.

Four Doors: The gurdwara has four entrance doors, symbolizing that it is open to all people from all four directions, regardless of caste, gender, or wealth.

Nishan Sahib: A tall flagpole bearing the triangular Sikh flag is flown outside, identifying the presence of the gurdwara and signaling its hospitality.

Community and service

Langar: The gurdwara operates a free, vegetarian community kitchen known as the langar. Meals are prepare and served by volunteers (seva) to promote equality and selfless service.

Sangat and Pangat: The community (sangat) gathers to eat together in rows (pangat) on the floor in the langar hall, which reinforces the belief in human equality.

Educational and community events: Beyond worship, the Sikh Cultural Society is active in the community, with events such as the New York Kabaddi Cup. It also offers educational resources on the Sikh faith and culture.

Inclusivity: The gurdwara is explicitly open to people of all faiths and backgrounds, with all visitors welcome to participate in the spiritual and communal activities.
