The Hindu Jain Temple in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, is a groundbreaking institution that uniquely serves both the Hindu and Jain communities in the greater Pittsburgh area. Its establishment in 1984 made it the first temple in the world where both traditions worship together in a single sacred space. History and founding
A community effort: The temple grew out of a movement of Indian immigrants in the 1970s. This group, composed of people from various regional and religious backgrounds. They decided to establish a place of worship that would serve everyone.
Acquiring the site: In 1973, a society was forming for the purpose of building a temple. The opportunity arose when the Pittsburgh Baptist Association decided to sell its church and land at 615 Illini Drive. The Indian community purchased the property. And after extensive planning, the new temple was inaugurated in 1984.
A historic first: Founded by Swami Chidanand Saraswati. The temple is recognizing for being the first to bring Hindus and Jains together in worship. It is also distinguished as the first temple to unite the Shwetambar and Digambar sects of Jainism.
Temple and architecture
Five-domed structure: The temple, set on ten acres of wooded land, features five distinct domes, or shikhars, which are a central part of its architecture.
Re-inauguration and recent ceremony: In August 2024, the temple celebrating its 40th anniversary with a re-inauguration ceremony that included a Shikhar Puja. Where consecrated water was pouring on the five domes.

Religious and cultural events: It regularly hosts a range of events, from daily pujas and monthly Satyanarayan Pujas to large-scale festivals like Janmashtami and Navratri.
