The Hindu Society of Alberta (HSA), located at 14225 133 Ave NW, is Edmonton's oldest Hindu organization. However, its physical temple and cultural center are currently closed due to fire damage that occurred in April 2025. Despite the closure, the Society remains active, with its core mission to serve the cultural, social, and religious needs of the Hindu community.

Key features

Established: The HSA was founde in 1967 and officially registered in 1972.

Initial activities: Before the temple was built, the Society hosted Hindi film screenings at the University of Alberta to raise funds. It held weekly religious sessions in a small room in Old Strathcona and offered Hindi classes in University classrooms.

Temple construction: After years of fundraising and effort, the Hindu Cultural Centre was constructe and opened to the public in 1984.

Cultural promotion: The Society aims to promote Hindu culture, social, and moral values among Hindus in Edmonton.

Community hub: The HSA serves as a central hub for the Hindu community, organizing religious programs, festivals, and cultural events.

Interfaith dialogue: It actively participates in interfaith events to promote respect and understanding among Edmonton's diverse cultural groups.
 
Temporary closure: The temple is temporarily close due to fire damage sustained in April 2025. Significant damage occurred in the back and hallway of the sanctum, and a full reconstruction project is underway.

Ongoing services: Despite the closure, the Society is still hosting community gatherings. Scheduled Sunday meetups are currently holding at the Italian Cultural Centre located at 14230 – 133 Ave NW.

Seeking support: The HSA is actively seeking donations for the reconstruction of the temple.
