Hindu Temple Society of North America
Description

The Hindu Temple Society of North America is a non-profit organization that manages the Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati Devasthanam temple in Flushing, Queens, New York City. It was one of the first traditionally-styled Hindu temples in the United States, consecrated on July 4, 1977.

History

The society was founded with the objective of building a temple in the U.S. using traditional Hindu architectural methods.

The temple is dedicated primarily to the deity Ganesha.

The temple's establishment marked a significant step in the growth of the Hindu community in the United States, providing a major cultural and religious center.

Features and services

Architecture: The temple is a faithful replication of classical Hindu architecture and design, with ornate carvings and pillars.

Deities: While Ganesha is the main deity, the temple complex houses shrines for other major Hindu deities as well.

Dining: The temple features a popular cafeteria in the basement that serves a wide variety of South Indian vegetarian food.

Cultural Center: In addition to its role as a place of worship, the society serves as a cultural hub for the community, offering classes on religious studies, music, and dance.
