Description
The Islamic Foundation of Lincoln (IFL) is more than just a mosque; it is a vibrant community hub and the oldest mosque in Nebraska. Established in 1986 as a nonprofit religious organization, the IFL fosters unity, peace, and tolerance by following the Quran and the Sunnah. As Lincoln's Muslim population has rapidly grown, so has the IFL, leading to the construction of a new, larger facility to accommodate its diverse and expanding congregation.
Beyond its role as a place of worship, the IFL is a center for education, support, and interfaith dialogue. It is a welcoming space for both Muslim and non-Muslim Lincolnites, with a mission to help strengthen the faith and moral conduct of Muslims in the area to better serve their community and society.
Key features
Growing community: The IFL serves a large and diverse Muslim community in Lincoln, with over 43 nationalities represented.
Expanded facilities: To address its growing congregation, the IFL has constructed a new facility, distinct from its original location (a converted church), that features a traditional domed roof and a crescent moon. The expansion includes added capacity for prayer, a children's playroom, offices, and a multi-purpose area.
Educational programs: The IFL provides numerous educational opportunities, such as:
- A weekend Islamic school for children ages 7 to 15, with a curriculum that includes Arabic, Quranic studies, and Islamic studies.
- Regular Jumu'ah Khutbahs (sermons) led by various scholars.
- Intensive summer courses for students to improve their Quranic recitation.
Community outreach: The foundation is deeply involved in local outreach, regularly holding events that bring together Muslims and non-Muslims. Past events have included large community fundraisers and free food services.
Religious services: The IFL offers a space for daily prayers and two Friday prayer sessions to accommodate its large congregation.
Interfaith engagement: The foundation actively promotes mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence through interfaith dialogue.
