Description
Kauai Aadheenam, also known as Kauai's Hindu Monastery, is a serene monastic and temple complex on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Founded in 1970 by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, it serves as the international headquarters of the Saiva Siddhanta Church and is a theological seminary for monks from various nations.
Key features
The Aadheenam houses two significant Saivite Hindu temples.
Kadavul Temple: This temple, established in 1973, is a fire temple with an intense spiritual energy. It features a large granite image of Lord Nataraja, the divine dancer, and a gilded image of the monastery's founder.
Iraivan Temple: Meaning "One Above All," this all-granite, hand-carved Chola-style temple is a testament to traditional craftsmanship, built without electricity. It houses a 700-pound, six-faced quartz crystal known as the Spatika Sivalingam. While under construction for many years, the temple was consecrated in 2023.
Rudraksha Forest: Visitors can meditate in a sacred grove of rudraksha trees, which are considered the compassionate tears of Lord Siva.
Wailua River: The monastery grounds include a beautiful stretch of the Wailua River, adding to the serene, natural setting.
Guru-disciple system: The monastics live a strict lifestyle of daily worship, meditation, yoga, and service under the guidance of a spiritual master.
Spiritual education: The Himalayan Academy, also based at the monastery, provides resources like Hinduism Today magazine, books, videos, and educational programs.
Service and sadhana: Monks are organized into different service areas, and all their work is considered an act of devotion, or seva.
