Sikh Temple – Victoria, BC
Description

The Khalsa Diwan Society, located at 1210 Topaz Avenue in Victoria, is a historic and significant Gurdwara that has served as a central spiritual and community hub for the Sikh population of Vancouver Island for over a century. Originally established by Sikh pioneers in 1912, the current, modern building was constructed in 1969 after the original was demolished to accommodate a growing community.

Key features

Pioneer establishment: The Gurdwara was established by early Sikh immigrants who arrived in Victoria around 1906, many of whom worked in the forest industry and lumber mills.

Oldest in North America: Along with its counterpart in Abbotsford, the Khalsa Diwan Society in Victoria is one of the oldest Gurdwaras operating in North America.

Historic parades: The opening of the original temple in 1912 was marked by a large parade through downtown Victoria, where banners of support flew from local Chinese societies.

Advocacy for rights: The Khalsa Diwan Society has a long history of advocating for the rights of Sikh and South Asian immigrants, including during the 1914 Komagata Maru incident.

Community Kitchen (Langar): A central tenet of Sikhism, the Gurdwara's community kitchen provides free vegetarian meals to all visitors, regardless of background. Visitors praise the food and warm hospitality.
