Description
The Sri Venkata Krishna Kshetra (SVK) Temple in Tempe is a functional Hindu temple and cultural center managed by the Sujnana Religious & Charitable Foundation, an organization affiliated with the 800-year-old Puthige Matha in Udupi, India. Serving the Hindu community of the Phoenix metropolitan area since its founding in 2000, SVK Temple offers a peaceful and spiritually uplifting atmosphere. It is known for its Udupi-style traditions and for creating a sacred space where devotees can find solace and connect with the divine.
Key features
Diverse deities: The temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara (a form of Vishnu) and Goddess Lakshmi. The temple complex also features shrines for other deities, including Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Sri Garuda, Lord Hanuman, and the Navagrahas.
Pilgrimage center (Kshetra): Named a Kshetra or pilgrimage center, the temple is said to offer the same benefits as visiting sacred sites in India, such as Thirupati and Pandarpur. This is due to the presence of Lord Venkateshwara and the first Mitika Bindhavana (a sacred site) of Sri Guru Raghavendra Swami in the U.S.
Udupi traditions: The temple follows the Udupi style, which is known for its unique rituals and traditions. The temple's affiliation with the Puthige Matha, established by Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya, reinforces its deep connection to this spiritual lineage.
Community and cultural hub: SVK Temple is a center for the local Hindu community, offering a variety of cultural and educational programs. These include classes for children and adults on religion, philosophy, and various Indian languages.
Annadana (community meals): The temple upholds the tradition of Annadana (giving food) by serving free Maha Prasadam (blessed food) after services, ensuring that all visitors are nourished in body and spirit.
Regular spiritual services: Well-versed priests perform daily pujas and other religious services throughout the week. Devotees can also book specific services like archanas and homas.
Welcoming and accessible environment: The temple is open and welcoming to people from all backgrounds, offering a peaceful atmosphere for personal reflection. It also provides accessible facilities, including wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking, and restrooms.
