Description
Founded in 1930, the Nation of Islam is an African American movement that seeks to improve the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of people of color in the United States. It was re-established under the leadership of Minister Louis Farrakhan after returning to the original teachings of Elijah Muhammad. The movement's theology, which is distinct from orthodox Islam, incorporates elements of Black nationalism and focuses on racial independence and self-sufficiency.
Key features
Distinct theology: Unlike mainstream Islam, the Nation of Islam teaches that its founder, Master Fard Muhammad, was "God in person" and that Allah is a Black man. It also believes that the Black race is the original race and divine.
Emphasis on self-sufficiency: The organization advocates for Black economic self-sufficiency and the creation of a separate nation-state for African Americans. It owns and operates hundreds of businesses nationwide to support its members.
Focus on discipline: The Nation of Islam maintains a strict code of conduct for its members, including specific dietary requirements and dress codes. It strongly discourages alcohol, drug use, and the eating of pork.
Black nationalism: The movement promotes racial unity, pride, and self-help, believing that Black Americans should have control over their own businesses, schools, and community organizations.
Community building: It establishes mosques and schools in urban areas and organizes events such as the Million Man March, which aim to address social issues affecting the Black community.
Knowledge of self: A central tenet is that "knowledge of self" is the key for Black people to realize their inner divinity.
