Description
The Gurudwara Sahib The Sikh Cultural Society Inc., located at 95-30 118th St. in South Richmond Hill, is a Sikh place of worship and community center. Also referred to as "the doorway to the Guru," this gurdwara is an open and inclusive space where Sikhs gather for worship, service, and learning.
As a spiritual and social hub, the Gurudwara Sahib offers a sanctuary for the eternal Guru (the Guru Granth Sahib) and a welcoming environment for all people, regardless of their background. Visitors are expected to remove their shoes and cover their heads as a sign of respect before entering the main hall. The gurdwara is funded through donations from the community (sangat), which are used for its upkeep and various programs.
Key features
Spiritual and religious
Guru Granth Sahib: The holy scripture is the central focus of worship and is treated as a living Guru. It is housed on a raised platform called the takht or manji sahib, under a canopy.
Darbar Sahib (Prayer Hall): This is the main hall where the congregation gathers for worship and spiritual activities. The Guru Granth Sahib is respectfully placed in this hall during the day.
Worship services: Daily prayers include the singing of hymns (kirtan) and the reading of verses (paath) from the Guru Granth Sahib.
Four Doors: The gurdwara has four entrance doors, symbolizing that it is open to all people from all four directions, regardless of caste, gender, or wealth.
Nishan Sahib: A tall flagpole bearing the triangular Sikh flag is flown outside, identifying the presence of the gurdwara and signaling its hospitality.
Community and service
Langar: The gurdwara operates a free, vegetarian community kitchen known as the langar. Meals are prepared and served by volunteers (seva) to promote equality and selfless service.
Sangat and Pangat: The community (sangat) gathers to eat together in rows (pangat) on the floor in the langar hall, which reinforces the belief in human equality.
Educational and community events: Beyond worship, the Sikh Cultural Society is active in the community, with events such as the New York Kabaddi Cup. It also offers educational resources on the Sikh faith and culture.
Inclusivity: The gurdwara is explicitly open to people of all faiths and backgrounds, with all visitors welcome to participate in the spiritual and communal activities.
