Description
The Hindu Temple of Delaware, also known as Mahalakshmi Devasthanam, began as the shared vision of a small group of Indian families in the USA. In 1996, after gathering for years, they held a groundbreaking ceremony in Hockessin on land purchased through the donations of about 60 families. The temple's construction was completed with the support of the local community, and it celebrated its inauguration in 2002.
Key Points:
Establishment: In the 1990s, a small group of Indian families in the US formed the Hindu Temple Association to build a permanent temple. The groundbreaking was held in 1996, and the temple opened in 2002.
Deities: The main deity of the temple is Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
Vision: The temple serves as a beacon of Indian culture, aiming to teach traditional values to younger generations and provide a platform for the community to come together.
Mission: The Hindu Temple Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the religious, cultural, and educational needs of the growing Indian population in the tri-state area. The mission includes holding traditional festivals, offering religious instruction, and promoting cultural awareness through various programs and language classes.
The Mahalakshmi Devasthanam stands as a testament to the dedication of a handful of families who turned a seemingly impossible dream into a reality for thousands. What began with monthly gatherings in borrowed spaces has blossomed into a full-fledged cultural and spiritual center for the Indian community in the Delaware Valley. Through patient planning and community fundraising, they built a place where their children and future generations could connect with their heritage, learn their languages, and celebrate their festivals in the most traditional manner. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, not only caters to the spiritual needs of its growing population but also serves as a vibrant hub for cultural enrichment and community harmony.
